Remembering Sherry Olvey

Sherry Olvey's funeral is this Wednesday, Feb 24 2:00 pm at A.S. Turner and Sons, 2773 N. Decatur Rd. (Winn Way and N. Decatur Rd intersection). Our hearts are with Sherry's friends and family during this time. Sherry was a blessing to so many of us, and we will miss her very much.

Sharon Jenkins Tucker wins Clifford Beers Award!

Sharon Jenkins Tucker received the 2009 Mental Health America Clifford W. Beers Award. When getting up every day was hampered by depression, she slept in the back seat of her car rather than be hospitalized. Since 2004 she has been the executive director of the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network, using her experience about the process of recovery, and her training as a peer specialist, to create the Peer Support and Wellness Center run by employed certified peer specialists.
"Does recovery work?" some are asking as they discuss how much to invest in health reform. "I'm the evidence," she told a cheering, weeping, and star-studded crowd.

The first night of the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network conference, attendees told their recovery stories on camera. The four people in this video are Sherry Olvey, who participates at the Peer Support and Wellness Center, Steve Morgan who is an excellent writer and advocate, Maureen Mayer, a full-time employee at the Wellness Center, and Pricilla, who we met that evening.

Introduction to Faces of Recovery

Welcome to Faces of Recovery, a video series and forum for individuals who have been diagnosed with mental illnesses to share their stories of recovery. Recovery is not only possible, but highly probable when given the proper support, hope, and peer models.

When an individual enters the mental health system with pronounced symptoms, he or she is typically given a serious diagnosis and a bleak future. Recovery is neither mentioned nor expected, yet recovery begins to happen the moment a person learns that recovery is possible.

People in recovery live full and meaningful lives outside of the mental health system and outside of their diagnoses. If it weren't for the actual faces of recovery, the stories they tell, and the lives they model, many people would never know that mental health recovery exists for them as well.

If recovery were expected and hope instilled, the mental health system would have a new, highly productive role in our society. As a result, our society would see mental illness in a whole new light and the stigma would eventually and naturally disappear.

This forum highlights the actual faces of recovery in hopes of showing the world, including the mental health system, a better way to view mental illness.
